How Does the Interactive Tape Customizer Work?
The Tape Jungle interactive tape customizer is built for anyone who wants control and confidence in their packaging. Whether you're creating tape for branding, security, or shipping efficiency, the process is straightforward, efficient, and supported every step of the way.
Step One: Tape and Size
Standard (PolyPro)
The most popular pick for custom-printed tape is standard polypropylene (PolyPro). It's not hard to understand why, as PolyPro tape has a crisp print resolution and can meet most users' needs. Plus, it is easy to use, cost-effective, and versatile. Depending on the grades or thickness of these rolls, they can accommodate packages of all sizes, from small to large.
This is a self-adhering hot melt tape, which means it has three layers: a layer of film similar to that of acrylic tape, a release coat that lets the product come off the roll easily, and a strong adhesive layer. Most people reach for a handheld dispenser to apply this tape, but you can also do it by hand.
A roll of Standard PolyPro has a glossy finish and is semitransparent and nonrecyclable. You've probably seen this kind of tape, often coated in an acrylic or rubber adhesive, at places like the post office or hardware store. But those rolls of tape - likely run-of-the-mill packing tape - aren't the only PolyPro tapes available through the tape customizer. There are four grades of PolyPro tape to choose from:
- General Purpose (1.9 mil.): The most popular choice includes the clear or brown packing tape you're probably familiar with. It has a recommended weight of up to 30 pounds, a 15% transparency level, and is excellent for most everyday uses.
- Heavy Duty (2.5 mil.): Heavy Duty is thicker and stronger than General Purpose PolyPro, so you can use it for packages weighing up to 50 pounds. It has a 10% transparency level.
- Industrial (3.0 mil.): Like its Heavy Duty counterpart, Industrial PolyPro tape has a 10% transparency level. The Industrial option pairs well with packages ranging from 60 to 90 pounds. Given that it's 20% thicker than Heavy Duty PolyPro, this tape's tensile strength is no surprise.
- Hi-Tak Cold Temp: Last but not least is Tape Jungle's Hi-Tak Cold Temp PolyPro tape. This custom packing tape's goal is to provide medium to heavy adhesion in low-temperature environments - meat processing plants, for instance. Hi-Tak Cold Temp tape can stick to a variety of surfaces.
Widths
- 2" (48mm) Width: This is the most popular and versatile size for everyday shipping. It's ideal for sealing small to medium-sized cartons - especially those measuring between 12 and 18 inches on at least one side. The 2-inch width fits most handheld dispensers and is easy to control, which makes it a great choice for teams managing medium-volume packing stations.
- 3" (72mm) Width: The wider 3-inch option offers broader surface coverage and a more secure seal, making it the better choice for larger or heavier boxes. It's particularly useful when you're dealing with bulky shipments, oversized branding, or packaging that needs to endure rough handling in transit. This size also allows for bolder, more visible designs, so if your artwork has a wide layout or intricate elements that benefit from extra space, the 72mm width is the better fit.
Lengths
- 55 Yards (Short): Great for promotions or use across multiple distribution centers. Compact and easy to store, this length is ideal for limited runs, temporary campaigns, or spreading inventory across locations without overstocking.
- 110 Yards (Standard): Most Popular. The go-to length for most applications. Offers the right balance between roll longevity and dispenser compatibility. Fits all industry-standard handheld tape dispensers and reduces the frequency of roll changes during daily use.
- 1,000 Yards (Machine Only): Best for high-volume operations. Designed exclusively for automatic or semi-automatic case sealers. Ideal for industrial environments, fulfillment centers, or warehouses with automated packing lines. Not compatible with handheld dispensers.
Premium (PVC)
Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, is another option for custom tape buyers. It makes an excellent packing tape for cold climates and irregular surfaces.
Like PolyPro packing tape, PVC tape is self-adhering. However, it doesn't fall into the hot melt category. It's a natural rubber tape, which makes it ideal for a wide range of surfaces. Coated or uncoated, new or recycled, hot or cold - it doesn't matter. Natural rubber PVC tape can adhere to it.
Premium tape's semi-opacity and flat finish appeal to upmarket brands and has a softer texture than PolyPro tape. This tape must be applied by hand, not with a machine. Like Standard PolyPro tape, Premium PVC is nonrecyclable.
You'll find this custom tape offered in two grades, General Purpose and Industrial:
- General Purpose (2.2 mil.): Since it works well for plenty of uses and on packages weighing up to 50 pounds, General Purpose is the more popular of Tape Jungle's PVC tape offerings. It's only 5% transparent, making it darker than any of the PolyPro products.
- Industrial (3.2 mil.): Industrial PVC tape is thicker and darker than General Purpose (3% transparent) and has a more aggressive adhesive, making it suitable for heavier packages no larger than 90 pounds.
Widths
- 2" (48mm) Width: This is the most common width; best for small to medium-sized boxes of up to 12-18" on at least one side. Compatible with most handheld dispensers. Ideal for designs with short text or narrow logos. A good fit for faster application and lower tape usage per box.
- 3" (72mm) Wide Width: Ideal for heavy or large boxes or for wide-format designs. Covers more surface area for stronger seals on bulky or oversized packages. Provides more space for large graphics or multi-line branding. Commonly used in warehouse or freight settings.
Lengths
- 55 Yards (Short): Great for promotions or multi-location use. A compact roll size that works well for limited campaigns or when you need to distribute inventory across several packing stations or distribution centers.
- 110 Yards (Standard): Most Popular. The preferred choice for most users. Offers a reliable balance between capacity and convenience. Fits all standard handheld dispensers and reduces the need for frequent roll changes during daily use.
Paper (Water-activated)
While PolyPro and PVC tapes are self-adhering, paper is not. It's a water-activated gummed paper tape, which means it will only adhere to surfaces if you apply water to the adhesive. That also means you can't put this kind of tape on a box by hand; you'll need a water-activated tape dispenser. Water-activated paper tape can bond to nearly all cardboard materials once you apply water to the adhesive.
A significant draw of this product is that it's an eco-friendly tape. The paper is manufactured sustainably and fully recyclable.
Water-activated tape is opaque with a matte finish and can handle both small and large volumes. It's also recyclable and creates a professionally branded, tamper-evident seal when applied.
There are three grades of water-activated paper tape available through Tape Jungle's interactive tape customizer:
- General Purpose 240: General Purpose 240 is the most popular water-activated paper offering. It's fully opaque and best suited for boxes weighing 30 pounds or less.
- Heavy Duty 260: Like General Purpose 240, Heavy Duty 260 is fully opaque. However, it's tighter and thicker thanks to a fiberglass reinforcement pattern and can handle up to 60 pounds.
- Industrial 280: Industrial 280 is the densest paper tape for the heaviest loads, provided they weigh no more than 90 pounds. Like the other two grades, Industrial 280 is not transparent at all.
Widths
- 3" (72mm) Wide Width: The industry standard width for paper tape, compatible with all traditional water-activated machine dispensers. Provides full seam coverage for secure sealing, especially on larger cartons. Ideal for bold logos or wider print layouts. Offers high visibility for branding while ensuring tamper-evident closure.
Lengths
- 375 Feet: Most Popular. The most common and versatile roll length for water-activated tape. It works well for standard packing volumes and fits most manual or electric water-activated dispensers.
- 450 Feet: A solid mid-range option. Provides additional length per roll for users who want to reduce changeovers without increasing roll size significantly. Ideal for moderate to high-volume packing stations.
- 500 Feet: Maximum length for extended use. Designed for higher-volume operations. Fewer roll changes make it a good fit for busy packing lines and fulfillment environments using compatible dispensers.
Digital Full-Color (Water-activated)
Last but certainly not least on the roster is digital full-color water-activated paper tape. This is gummed tape, so when the adhesive contacts water, it creates a tamper-evident seal. It can include any color, image, or design.
This type of tape is ideal for anyone who needs their order to have a quick turnaround time. Since there are reduced proofing demands and no need for printing plates, digital printing occurs much faster than traditional printing. A custom full-color order can ship within five business days of proofing.
There are a few things you should keep in mind before submitting your digital full-color paper tape order:
- Make sure you choose your background color wisely. For example, if you want a particularly colorful design or logo printed on your roll, you'll probably want to go with a neutral background.
- A solid-colored design is usually the way to go, especially when trying to build brand recognition.
Width
- 3" (72mm) Wide Width: This is the standard width for digitally printed paper tape and is compatible with all common water-activated tape dispensers. Offers ample space for full-color graphics, gradients, and detailed branding elements. Designed to deliver edge-to-edge impact while maintaining a secure, tamper-evident seal on medium to large cartons.
Length
- 375 Feet: Most Popular. The standard and only length available for Digital Full-Color Water-Activated Tape. Sized at 3" (72mm) x 375', this format is optimized for full-color printing and fits all compatible water-activated tape dispensers. Ideal for achieving high-resolution branding with strong adhesive performance.
Step Two: Colors
Color Selection Considerations
Color combinations significantly impact visibility, legibility, and brand recognition. High-contrast pairings like black on yellow offer excellent visibility in warehouse and shipping environments, especially where quick box identification matters. For brand cohesion across packaging, using exact brand colors helps reinforce visual identity from unboxing to repeat purchase.
Tape Jungle supports custom color matching using the PANTONE® catalog, ensuring your printed tape aligns precisely with your brand standards.

The Color Count Guide
Our printing process allows for up to three print colors total, including the background if it is not the base tape color. Here's how it works:
- Choosing a colored background (via floodcoat or reverse print) counts as one color.
- You then have two additional ink colors available for your logo or design.
- White is not counted against the color limit when printed on white tape, as it's considered the base substrate.
- If white is one of your print colors on a colored background, it counts as a usable ink color.
This system gives you flexibility to achieve high-impact designs while staying within print limitations.
Note: The online preview tool does not alter your uploaded artwork. Your final proof will reflect the exact colors and layout you've selected.
Background Style Options
- Neutral (recommended): Your design prints directly onto the tape's base color (typically white or kraft). This approach supports continuous printing with no gaps and is the most efficient, cost-effective option.
- Floodcoat: A full layer of light ink is applied as a background before your design is printed on top. This allows for consistent color coverage and continuous printing while maintaining print clarity.
- Reverse Print: A dark floodcoat is applied, with lighter ink printed on top. This style offers high contrast and strong visual impact, but due to print plate spacing requirements, it includes a 1/8-inch horizontal gap between design repeats. For uninterrupted background appearance, Neutral or Floodcoat is recommended.
Step Three: Design
Once youve selected your tape specs, youll be prompted to upload the artwork that will be printed on your tape, whether thats your logo, a brand slogan, or a custom message. This is where your design becomes real.
The tool accepts a wide range of file types, including .ai, .eps, .psd, .pdf, .png, .jpg, and .svg, so you can upload anything from a simple logo file to a fully designed layout. If you're not ready with artwork, you can choose to email it later or simply note that your design will consist of plain text. Here is what the tool can do:
- Position your logo and design elements
- Adjust the size and scale of each component
- Add custom text in various fonts and sizes
- Control the spacing between repeating elements
- Rotate graphics for optimal placement
Theres also a notes section where you can leave specific instructions, edits, or preferences for the designers - whether its positioning, font choice, or design spacing. If you're not sure what to write, that's okay too. Our team reviews every submission and will build the ideal layout based on your specs.
If you're not comfortable using the layout editor, simply upload your logo and include your notes - our professional design team will create a proof based on your preferences and selected specs.

Step Four: Quantity
Once your design is finalized, the next step is deciding how many rolls of custom printed tape to include in your order. Your unit cost is directly tied to volume - the more you print, the lower your price per roll.
Tape Jungle recommends ordering at least a six-month supply to reduce your per-roll cost and ensure packaging consistency across your shipments. This is especially important for businesses that ship regularly or plan for seasonal demand.
Volume Discounts by Tape Type
Each tape material - whether it's PolyPro, PVC, Water-Activated Paper Tape, or Digital Full-Color - comes with its own pricing structure, including quantity breakpoints and discount levels. As your order size increases, so does your discount, but the roll thresholds vary by product type.
Larger orders not only improve your per-roll pricing but also reduce the frequency of reordering, saving time and operational overhead.
Use the Built-In Usage Estimator
Not sure how much tape you'll need? The customizer includes a usage estimator to help you make an informed decision. Just enter how many boxes you typically ship per day by size:
- Small (6×6×6)
- Medium (12×12×12)
- Large (18×18×18)
- Extra-Large (24×24×24)
You can also enter custom box dimensions for greater accuracy. The estimator calculates your projected monthly tape usage and suggests a roll quantity based on your actual shipping volume.
This tool is ideal for first-time custom tape buyers or businesses scaling up. It ensures you're ordering enough tape to meet your needs without overcommitting - while still unlocking the best available pricing tier for your selected product.
Step Five: Review
Before clicking Add to Cart, you'll be prompted to review your entire order. This step ensures that all your selections are correct before anything moves into production. It's your last opportunity to confirm that the custom tape you're ordering aligns with your branding, budget, and shipping needs.
During the review stage, you'll see a full breakdown of your order, including:
- Tape specifications: material, adhesive grade, and whether this is a new order or reorder
- Size details: width and roll length selected
- Design choices: background color, ink selections, any uploaded artwork or entered text
- Quantity and pricing: number of rolls, unit cost, and applicable setup or plate fees
- Production timeline: expected proof delivery date, approval deadline, and estimated ship date
You can still edit any section - including the material, design colors, tape size, or quantity - before finalizing the order.
Transparent Pricing and Timeline
The review page includes an itemized cost summary, so you know exactly what you're paying for. This typically includes the tape cost, any custom color or plate fees (if applicable), and a note on shipping charges or discounts.
Alongside pricing, you'll also see your production timeline, outlining:
- When your proof will be ready
- When you'll need to approve the final design
- When your tape is estimated to ship
This helps you plan ahead, especially if you're ordering for an event, campaign launch, or seasonal promotion.
Our Proof Approval Process
We don't print anything until you're completely satisfied.
After you place your order, our design team will review your selections and prepare a professional digital proof. You'll be able to request changes or revisions before anything goes into production. Only after you approve the final layout does your tape move into printing.
Your order remains 100% refundable until proof approval, so you can move forward with confidence.
If everything in the final review looks right, go ahead and place your order. We'll take it from there.
Why Use Custom-Printed Tape?
Custom-printed tape does more than seal a box - it builds your brand, protects your product, and improves how your business is perceived at every step of the shipping process.
- Brand Visibility at a Lower Cost: Printing your logo or name directly on the box is one way to get seen, but custom tape delivers the same exposure at a fraction of the cost. Every box becomes a mobile ad for your business, visible from the moment it leaves your warehouse to the second it's opened.
- Professional Presentation: Details matter. When customers receive a package sealed with custom tape, it tells them you care about quality and brand consistency. It sets a professional tone and strengthens your reputation.
- Tamper Evidence and Handling Guidance: Unlike generic tape, custom-printed tape is harder to duplicate. If someone tampers with the box, it will show. You can also print instructions like "Fragile" or "This Way Up" directly on the tape to reduce damage in transit and reinforce your commitment to safe delivery.
- Package Identification: Branded tape makes it easier to locate, track, and recover shipments. Whether in a crowded mailroom or a warehouse, your packages stand out immediately. Add batch numbers or product IDs to support sorting and traceability.
Tailored for Any IndustryThe benefits of custom tape apply across a wide range of industries, each using it in different but impactful ways:
- Manufacturing & Industrial: Secure heavy shipments, organize parts, and streamline logistics.
- Automotive & Aerospace: Use high-performance adhesives for bonding, insulation, and safety labeling.
- Construction: Apply to materials and tools with weather-resistant adhesion and clear site identification.
- Event Production: Seal and label gear without residue during travel and setup.
- Printing & Packaging: Add a professional finish and reinforce brand identity with every delivery.
- Garment & Textile: Ship delicate products with packaging that protects and promotes.
- E-commerce & Subscription Boxes: Turn plain boxes into branded, shareable moments that drive loyalty.
- Exporters & Distributors: Differentiate shipments and reduce cost per roll with high-volume pricing.
From function to first impression, custom-printed tape supports your business at every stage of fulfillment. It's packaging that performs - and promotes.
