Velcro Tape and Its Uses

Velcro Tape and Its Uses

While many people call the fasteners used frequently on coats and kids’ shoes “Velcro,” Velcro is actually a brand name for a company known for creating what is generically known as a hook & loop fastener. In this article, we’ll call hook and loop fasteners “Velcro” whether or not they are from a specific brand.

Velcro Tape

Velcro tape works by having two sides (a hook side and a loop side) that stick together when touching. They are handy because they can be refastened many times before losing stick, unlike traditional tape or glue.

Velcro Tape Uses

Velcro Tape is a versatile material with a surprising number of uses around the home.

Hang Pictures

Use Velcro to hang pictures on the wall. This is especially handy for areas where you like to change pictures out frequently.

Organize Your Space

Velcro has a lot of organizational potential. For example, you could put a Velcro dot on the back of an oven mitt and stick it on the back side of a cabinet to save space.

Keep Curtains or Rugs in Place

With Velcro dots or strips, you can keep rugs and curtains in position despite kids’ and pets’ best efforts.

Manage Cables

You can use strips with Velcro adhesive ends to bundle cables together behind entertainment centers and computers. This can be preferable to more permanent options if you frequently move equipment.

Velcro Tape Options

Coins or Dots

Velcro dot tape is a good option for lightweight decorative uses. For example, you could use coins to hang lights or other decorations outside your home. They’re also handy for organization purposes.

Strips

Strips of Velcro with a hook end and a loop end can be used to create a resealable fastener. These work great for bundling cords and rope. You can also buy Velcro tape rolls that can be cut to size.

Industrial or Heavy Duty

Certain hook and look fasteners are created to be able to withhold large amounts of weight. Before buying Velcro for heavier use applications, make sure to check that the objects you want to hang do not weigh more than the advertised weight the fastener can handle.

Why Would You Buy Velcro Tape?

The uses for Velcro tape mentioned above could be solved by other solutions. For example, you could buy stick-on hooks rather than using Velcro to organize a space. However, hook and loop fasteners have a few distinct advantages.

Easier To Use

Many people find Velcro an easier solution than traditional hooks. Velcro is great in situations where you want to change out or grab tools frequently but want them to hang flush with the wall rather than on a hook. For example, you could stick work gloves onto a shed wall rather than maneuvering them onto a hook.

More Kid Friendly

There is a reason Velcro tape is often used in children’s shoes. Velcro can be easier for young children to navigate than traditional shoelaces, tape, or hooks. As parents can attest, making it easier for kids to clean up can keep spaces neater.

It Can Be Stronger Than You Think

Many people may be tempted to write off Velcro tape for certain applications due to a worry that it won’t be able to hold up. However, as mentioned before, there is industrial Velcro available that can hold larger tools such as rakes and shovels.
